Good morning from RIO, recording some great moments from yesterday for all of us. We started the day with a visit from our athlete, she ubered down with another team mate to our apartment. It was great to visit with her and she of course made sure we, the roomies, were all inline-she made sure we weren't drinking the tap water and that we were using the bug repellent, that we weren't wearing expensive jewelry, we weren't even permitted to bring it, that we were eating well and drinking our water...she get's her title "mom" from her teammates earnestly.
We set out for a walk together for an Acai bowl and felt like I had the secret service ("mom")with me...every time I took out my camera or fell behind a little with the group she hovered over me and clicked her heels for me to fall in...I know we were in good hands...a side note, she and her team were trained in self defense from a navy seal before coming to RIO.
Rob and Hannah set off for the Olympic Swimming Event. Hannah is a swimmer at the University of Akron.
Later we all met up at the P & G house and mingled with some really special people...we met David and Ferby Higgins from San Clemente California, they are parents of David Higgins, Jr. a sharp shooter competing in the games. David and I struck up a conversation about the coffee at the P & G house and it turns out David is originally from Weirton, WV, a Steeler fan, he knew all about Aliquippa and it's athletes... We invited them to our table and really enjoyed talking to them. Look for David in the 50m Riffle Prone Men on August 12th.
Anyone recognize this man...world renowned gymnastic coach, Bela Karolyi, coach of Nadia Comaneci, Mary Lou Retton, Kerri Strug, just to name a few. Rob points him out to us and recalls the heart felt moment that he carried Kerri Strug off the mat after she competed on an injured ankle...Rob, you would remember that, you told it like it happened yesterday...
The Hannah's go over and ask him for a picture and he obliges. It seems to me that he has a beautiful spirit...Hannah concurs.
